In 2010 MassArt and designLAB worked in collaboration with The Massachusetts Audubon Society’s to design and construct an outdoor classroom for Drumlin Farm Wildlife Sanctuary.

Located in a clearing surrounded by pine trees, the outdoor classroom consists of a 400 sf platform covered by a waterproof fabric tensile roof suspended from adjacent trees. It includes three small ‘satellite’ learning areas, wood sculptural elements lining the entry path, and several tables and chairs incorporated into the surrounding landscape. The sheltered platform provides students and campers with a safe and dry gathering space where they can learn explore the natural environment. The built project itself will also serve as a learning tool for the children, teaching them how wood, concrete, and steel are combined to create the overall structure.
