Farandnear is an 89-acre community park in central Massachusetts. It was the summer home of Arthur Banks – an accomplished political scientist and professor – and his family for several generations. The Farandnear Pavilion is located on the site of the Banks’ old house and was constructed using an intricate system of structural steel nodes and exposed Douglas fir timbers. It features an eco-friendly rainwater collection system and a custom painted structural slab that depicts a map of the reservation, as well as a two bathrooms, a storage closet, and an interactive educational exhibit that teach visitors about the plants and animals that call Farandnear home.

The pavilion is designed around a fireplace to reinforce the notion of a hearth as a gathering place for family or community. The footprint of the house’s original foundation remains visible and the steel posts that hold the wood frame are buried in the old basement and extend up through the concrete floor to support the new structure.
