The Farnsworth Art Museum, located in a small seaport town, contains works by several nineteenth century American painters, including Winslow Homer, Rockwell Kent, and the Wyeth family.

Robert Miklos, while Principal at Schwartz/Silver Architects, developed a master plan for the museum’s expansion, which includes a contemporary art gallery, an education center, Wyeth family archives, and a cafe. The museum consists of a variety of buildings and it was necessary to reconfigure them as a landscaped campus to better orient the visitor. Parking was organized close to the new glass and steel entrance, and the 19th century church was renovated as a visitor center and gallery. Creating an engaging complex of several historic and new buildings, this project effortlessly melds past and present into a unforgettable visitor’s experience.
