dLAB founder, Bob Miklos saved a derelict Whaling Era house in Nantucket’s Historic District as his family’s Summer and Weekend home.

The 6-month restoration project began with research at the Nantucket Historic Association by looking at early maps and glass plate photographs to determine the original footprint and form of the classic Quaker half cape with ell.

The demand for large houses with multiple amenities is high on island, as Nantucket is the premier vacation destination in the Northeast. Nonetheless, Miklos uncharacteristically removed two later additions, restoring the 1846 house’s original form and detail rather than doubling its size.

The rabbit warren of small light-less rooms was edited creating large open spaces for entertaining in character with the larger houses on island of the Greek Revival period. As a result the 1200 SF, 2-bedroom house graciously accommodates 2-3 couples, as weekend guests yet is easy to maintain.

The former kitchen ell was re-purposed as an informal ‘Study’ with fieldstone fireplace that is convertible as the Master Bedroom suite with private bath.

The kitchen was moved to the former Front Parlor utilizing the original fireplace and in the most convenient location for entertaining.
