pondering paint schemes

The renovation of Sheldon Hall included the refreshing of the ornate, domed Study Hall, a key element for improving the student experience. Historically painted in an unloved palette of green and beige, previous efforts to repaint had stalled due to cost. Despite a limited budget and fast-tracked schedule, the School sought to move away from the green. Initial studies explored complementary green and white palettes, however, the School ultimately requested a single-color white treatment for the dome with a new color introduced below.

After several discussions on color and materiality, we reached consensus on a neutral palette. To control scale and budget, a detailed study of multi-value color options was undertaken with the construction manager and painting contractors, resulting in various subtle neutral schemes to articulate the wood and plaster ornament. The preferred options were then explored in different hues, ultimately selecting a neutral grey palette that restored the historic splendor of the treasured campus space.
