Orange County Department of Public Works | Goshen, New York
βThe strategic demolition and skillful addition of new structures along with well executed improvements to the landscape breathe new life into the brutalist concrete structure.β
Designed by famed architect Paul Rudolph and built during the height of the concrete Brutalist era in the mid 1960's, the shifting concrete volumes of the Orange County Government Center is an architectural force to be reckoned with. Originally designed as a place for civic engagement and service, the complex of three building divisions and central courtyard has become burdened with poor office fit-outs, deferred maintenance, and has fallen into disrepair. The original splendor has long since been lost.
In collaboration with the Orange County Department of Works, designLAB completed a Conceptual Design to transform the iconic building. The new design for the 170,000 SF building includes new offices for various county departments, customer service points, legislative chambers, in addition to new community amenities, entry lobbies, atriums, and extensive reworking of the site and landscape.
