Love him or hate him, Paul Rudolph was a bold, unapologetic architect. He is famous (or perhaps infamous) for his relentless use of concrete to create spatially complex forms. As part of the renovation and addition to Rudolph’s library at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, designLAB has applied the spirit of his design to the human scale. Where Rudolph carves a rhythm of balconies into his concrete façade, we have carved new bookcases, desks, bike racks, seats, and lounges into the building and landscape. And where Rudolph’s use of raw concrete enables gravity-defying cantilevers and column-free spans, our use of walnut and ipe invites human touch and interaction.
