sheldon hall
concord, new hampshire
Sheldon Hall is a stunning example of Beaux-Arts architecture, classically organized around a central rotunda and entry portico on the St. Paulβs School campus in central New Hampshire. Built in 1909, it was purpose-built as a Library and later renovated in the mid-90s to accommodate the schoolβs Admissions Department. While treasured, all of the building systems were beyond their useful life, and the interior architectural finishes were tired, disjointed, and in need of a comprehensive refresh.
The building's historic interior character, including its ornate domed ceiling within the rotunda, was carefully preserved. Enhancements included new lighting, furnishings, and a paint scheme that was sensitive to the historic character of Sheldon Hall and the administration's desire to modernize the building. A key architectural move involved the sensitive enclosure of the historic exterior portico to create expanded, year-round student space, maximizing natural light and offering sweeping views of the adjacent pond and landscape.
designLAB restored the building to its original historic splendor and addressed critical infrastructure needs; modernized mechanical and electrical systems were carefully integrated into the historic fabric, and a monumental custom chandelier was introduced to highlight the architectural detailing and ensure a comfortable, contemporary study environment. Through this renovation, Sheldon Hall has been repositioned as a vibrant student gathering and study space, returning it to the student experience and emphasizing its historic significance on the St. Paulβs School campus.

The renovation of Sheldon Hall included the refreshing of the ornate, domed Study Hall, a key element for improving the student experience. Historically painted in an unloved palette of green and beige, designLABβs renovation included the investigation of numerous color palettes for the repainting of this space. Ultimately, a fresh, clean neutral grey palette was selected, bringing a bright atmosphere and modern feel to the room, while also restoring the historic splendor of the treasured campus space.
